Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is permanent industrial marking, and why is it used?
Permanent industrial marking places identification directly onto a part or product, so it remains readable throughout its required service life. Manufacturers use industrial laser marking systems and other marking technologies for serial numbers, part numbers, logos, date and batch codes, barcodes, Data Matrix codes and QR codes. It supports product identification, quality control, traceability and, where applicable, regulatory or customer requirements. The required durability depends on the application: a mark may need to resist wear, cleaning, heat, chemicals, corrosion or outdoor exposure.
When use direct part marking instead of labels, ink, hand stamps or vibro-etch tools?
Direct part marking cannot detach like a label and can be generated automatically from production data. Compared with manual methods, it improves consistency, repeatability and control of variable information. Part marking machines can also reduce consumables. Labels and ink remain suitable for many applications, especially when direct marking is not allowed or very high speed coding is required. The right choice depends on the material, required lifetime, cycle time, mark quality, automation level and total operating cost.
Which type of laser marker is suitable for which material?
Fiber laser marking machines are widely used for metal marking and much engineering plastic marking. MOPA fiber lasers provide greater pulse control, which can improve contrast and process flexibility on selected metals and plastics. Vanadate lasers are suited to fine, high-contrast marking on a broad range of sensitive materials. Green and UV laser marking machines are useful for difficult, reflective or heat-sensitive materials and very fine marking. CO2 laser engraving machines are commonly used on paper, cardboard, wood, glass, rubber and selected plastics. A sample test remains essential because materials with the same generic name can react differently.
Can Telesis laser marking systems use cameras or vision technology?
Yes. Depending on the system, vision can help position the mark, check that the correct part is present and read the marked content or support verification. Selected laser etching machines offer through-the-lens vision.
