Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between dot peen, scribe and laser marking?
A dot peen marking machine uses a controlled pin to create a mark made of small indentations (dots). It is robust, produces deep marks and works well on many industrial parts. Scribe marking draws continuous lines with a hardened pin. It creates clear, deep marks with less noise and is widely used for VIN and chassis marking. Laser marking systems use non-contact technology to produce fast, precise, high-contrast text, graphics and machine-readable codes. The technology choice depends on the material, required depth or contrast, cycle time, surface geometry, noise level and safety concept.
What is the difference between pneumatic and electric dot peen marking systems?
Both technologies create permanent marks by driving a marking pin into the material. The main difference is how the pin is powered. Pneumatic systems use compressed air. These dot peen marking machines provide greater impact force and are generally preferred for deep marking on hard metals, castings, rough surfaces and heavy industrial parts. They require a suitable compressed air supply and air lines. Electric systems use an electrically driven pin and do not require compressed air. This kind of dot peen marking equipment is easier to install, is usually quieter and provides precise, repeatable pin control. They are suitable for workshops, portable applications, precision parts and automated production lines. The best choice depends on the material, required marking depth, surface condition, cycle time, available utilities and acceptable noise level.
What is Telesis Floating Pin technology?
Floating Pin technology was developed and patented by Telesis for its pneumatic PINSTAMP® dot peen marking systems. Compressed air drives and returns the marking pin, allowing it to move on a cushion of air without using a return spring. The available pin travel compensates for surface variations of up to 6mm. This helps produce clear and consistent marks on curved, uneven or rough parts. The absence of a return spring reduces wear and maintenance. A constant positive airflow also helps keep debris out of the pin chamber. Floating Pin technology is particularly useful for pipe marking (including gas pipe marking), castings, forgings, chassis & VIN marking and other parts with variable surfaces.
Can Telesis dot peen marking systems use cameras or vision technology?
Yes. Depending on the system, vision can help position the mark, check that the correct part is present and read the marked content or support verification. Dot peen engraving machines can use dedicated vision options. Reading a code is not the same as grading its quality. If the application requires OCR, code verification or a defined Data Matrix grade, this should be specified so that the correct camera, lighting and software can be advised.
Are marking systems available like handheld, benchtop or integrated solutions?
Yes. Telesis offers portable and handheld dot peen marking systems, benchtop machines, standalone workstations and marking heads for integration into automated production lines. Scribe systems are generally installed in fixtures or production equipment.
Can curved, uneven or cylindrical parts be marked?
Yes, but the solution depends on technology and geometry. Floating Pin dot peen marking machines can compensate for limited surface variation. Fixtures and rotary axes can position cylindrical parts or create marks around a circumference. Laser systems must keep the surface within the available focus range; a rotary axis, programmable Z-axis or variable-focus solution may be required. The part diameter, curvature, marking area and required code quality should be reviewed before the equipment is selected.
Can Telesis systems mark VINs, chassis and trailer identification?
Yes. Dot peen and scribe systems are commonly used for permanent vehicle identification marking, chassis and trailer identification. The required position, character size, depth, format and tamper resistance can vary by country, vehicle category, approval authority and manufacturer. Applications may require a dedicated VIN marking machine. The marking equipment must therefore be selected against the exact technical and regulatory requirement.
Can permanent marking be used for asset and security identification?
Yes. Asset marking (a permanent serial number, owner reference, Data Matrix code or other identifier) can support asset control and make unauthorised removal or alteration more visible. Portable dot peen equipment is useful for tools, machinery, trailers and other items that are difficult to move. Dot peen marking machines are commonly used for equipment tagging and asset identification. Property marking does not prevent theft by itself, but it can improve identification and traceability and provide evidence of tampering, supporting permanent security marking initiatives. The marking depth and location should be chosen so the item is not damaged.
